The Aeolian Islands are situated in the province of Messina, and are accessible all year by
hydrofoil and ferry from various ports in Sicily and also from the mainland. HYDROFOILS
depart from the following ports;
Milazzo, Sicily; journey time approx. 45 mins, all year round
Messina, Sicily; journey time 1h 10 mins, all year round
Reggio Calabria, Calabria; situated on the mainland, journey time approx. 2 hrs, all year round
Palermo, Sicily; journey time approx. 5 hrs 30 mins, from 01.06 – 15.09 only
Naples Mergellina; 01.06 – 15.09, journey time approx. 6 hours, from 01.06 – 15.09 only
FERRIES depart from the following ports;
Milazzo, Sicily; journey time approx. 1 hour 45 mins, all-year-round
Naples Calata Porta di Massa; journey time approx. 14 hours (night ferry), all-year-round
Cefalù; journey time approx 3 hours 30 mins, from 01.06 – 15.09 only
BY AIR: Catania Fontanarossa airport, Sicily, is the nearest airport to the Aeolian Islands.
From the airport there are regular minibuses and taxis which depart for Milazzo (approx. 1h
30 mins), from where there are frequent hydrofoil/ferry departures. From Palermo Falcone –
Borsellino airport, there are taxis and minibuses which depart frequently to Palermo Port or
Cefalù port from where there are ferry departures in summer months. From Reggio Calabria
airport situated on mainland Italy, there are regular taxis and minibuses which depart for the port
from where there are hydrofoil departures all year round.
BY CAR: Travelling from north Italy, car ferries depart from Naples Calata Porta di Massa
direct to Catania (journey time 11 hours). Once in Catania, take the motorway following signs
to Milazzo-porto (approx 1hr 20mins), from where there are frequent car ferry departures to the
island of Vulcano (1hr 45 mins).
From Naples Calata Porta di Massa there are direct car ferries to the Aeolian Islands all-year-
round (journey time approx 14 hours, night departure). Exit at Naples and follow signs Napoli
Zona Portuale.
BY TRAIN:There is a frequent railway service to Milazzo departing from main Italian cities;
Rome, Naples, Venice, Turin, Palermo and Messina. Once in Milazzo, there are taxis and buses to
the port from where there are frequent ferry/hydrofoil departures.
